Thread veins are extremely common and sometimes embarrassing, mostly affecting the face, body and legs.
The cause of thread veins are unknown although they may be caused by changes in temperature, smoking, hormonal changes, alcohol and prolonged standing as well as being a possible inherited condition.
They can appear as single veins, widely dispersed or as a collection of broken veins close together. They can also appear as a collection of vessels arising from a single point; these are known as Spider Naevi.
We offer two methods available to treat thread veins: sclerotherapy (the injection of a sclerosing agent into the vessels, normally on the legs) and Veinwave treatment.
Veinwave is useful for treating very small veins normally to the facial area, commonly known as telangiectasia. We have been providing this Thread Vein Treatment at our Clinic for the successful removal of unsightly Spider Veins for over 15 years.
The thermo-coagulation of Veinwave is an effective solution for treating small veins on the face, such as those troublesome areas on the nose and cheeks. Thermo-coagulation is based on a high-frequency wave producing a thermal lesion with the protection of the skin, a very fine needle is inserted into the vein and it can disappear instantaneously. The single-use sterile needle is covered with an insulating sheath which protects the skin, enabling a targeted action.
The sensation is similar to a warm pinprick, others relate it to a minor sting which doesn’t linger – often it depends upon the location of the treatment.
Immediately after the treatment, you can resume everyday activities, however, we strongly recommend you avoid the sun for a couple of days or use sunblock. After a few day’s very small micro crusts can appear where Veinwave needle has been applied. This is normal and no special care is required and generally heals within a few days.
Sclerotherapy is a treatment for unsightly thread veins on the legs, practised by Dr Rebecca Hierons here at Laserase.
Sclerotherapy involves injecting unwanted, thread veins with a dilute substance causing inflammation of the vein wall, which causes the vessel to seal up. The body naturally clears away the remains of the vein over a period of weeks.
In the long term, sclerotherapy benefits unsightly, superficial veins, however it is not a preventative treatment and cannot stop new veins from appearing.
