+ What causes acne?

Acne is caused when tiny holes in the skin, known as hair follicles, become blocked. Sabaceous glands are tiny glands found near the surface of your skin. These glands lubricate the hair and the skin by producing sebum. In acne the glands produce too much sebum which forms a plug in the follicle. If the unplugged follicle is close to the surface of the skin, it bulges outwards creating a whitehead, Alternaitvley, the plugged follicle can be open to the skin, creating a blackhead. Normally harmless bacteria that live on the skin can then contaminate and infect the plugged follicles, causing papules, pustules, nodules or cysts.

+ Why do teenagers get acne?

Teenage acne is thought to be triggered by increased levels of a hormone called testosterone, which occurs during puberty. The sebaceous glands are particularly sensitive to hormones. Increased levels of testosterone cause the glands to produce much more sebum than the skin needs, which inturn causes spots.

+ Does diet affect acne?

The simplest answer is no. So far research has not found any foods that cause acne. A good balanced diet is recommend for general well-being. We have a range of skin care products specially formulated for acne skins.

+ How many treatments will be required?

That depends on how severe your acne is and what if any treatments you have had before. Above all we are a medical facility and will give you the tretament that is best suited to your condition.

+ What does the treatment involve?

Treatment is simple, you lie back and relax. Firstly your skin will be cleaned with an appropriate wash for your skin type. It is important to exfoliate the skin before this treatment to remove those dead skin cells as it can create a barrier which will then reduce the level of absorption of the light into the skin which may affect the overall result of the treatment.

Step 1 – The practitioner will cleanse the area using the appropriate products for your skin type. Step 2– The skin will be blotted to ensure it is dry. Step 3– Practitioner may use a white pencil to grid the area that is being treated to ensure the entire area is covered effectively and to help maintain patient comfort. Step 3– The patient’s eyes are covered with black out goggles to protect the eye area from the light of the laser. Step 4– The practitioner will then use the hand piece in an up and down motion over the area, usually starting at the jawline.

Patients will feel a warm, slightly tingly or prickly sensation on the skin which lasts for a few seconds, after treatment the skin can look a little flushed and feel slightly warm which is a normal reaction and will calm down after a few hours. It takes less than 30 minutes to cover the whole face. You may feel a warming sensation, treatment is usually fast and painless.
